When you are out shopping for bedding you are likely to encounter bed sheets made out of all kinds of different materials and of different qualities.
Microfiber sheets are likely to be fairly common on the shelves (or online: Click here for the full selection of Microfiber Sheets at Amazon.com) but you may be wondering what exactly what microfiber sheets are made from and how they stack up against other bedding materials in terms of comfort, durability and style.
What is Microfiber?
The term microfiber refers to any fiber with strands that are less than one denier in width. A denier a measurement that is used to identify the fiber thickness of individual threads. Apart from on bed sheet packaging you are most likely to have seen a denier measurement on the packaging of pantyhose or stockings.
One denier is extremely fine, which is the reason that many people feel microfiber sheets offer the ultimate in comfort. The threads in their rival, Egyptian cotton, are almost three times thicker.
Microfiber sheets are considered to be constructed from synthetic materials and usually consists of two or more fibers combined together, most commonly polyester and nylon. Other combinations are being used these days to produce microfiber bed sheets including the addition of such eco friendly materials as bamboo.
How Easy are Microfiber Sheets to Care For?
Those who manufacture microfiber sheets often point to the fact that microfiber sheets are very stain resistant, rather durable and easy to care for.
Microfiber in general is very stain resistant. Many people love microfiber furniture because spilt Liquids bead up; stains can be wiped off. In theory, if you make a habit of drinking (and spilling that drink) in bed your microfiber sheets have similar properties.
Some people complain that newly laundered microfiber sheets are full of static. It is quite true that microfibers do possess a natural static charge. The static can be combated though by using a fabric softener sheet in the dryer after the microfiber bed sheets have been washed though.
How Expensive are Microfiber Sheets?
One of the best things about microfiber sheets is that they are relatively inexpensive given the quality. On average a set of microfiber sheets will cost several dollars less than an equivalent set in Egyptian cotton, another popular choice for bed sheets.
